Syabrubesi is the principal gateway to some of Nepal’s most beautiful trekking regions — the Langtang Valley Trek, the Tamang Heritage Trail, the Gosaikunda Lake Trek, and the Ganjala Pass Trek. Sitting at an altitude of 1,550 metres in the Rasuwa District, this scenic mountain village is approximately 122 kilometres north of Kathmandu.
Unlike popular destinations such as Pokhara or Lukla, there are no flights and no luxury tourist coaches serving the Kathmandu to Syabrubesi route. Your main transport options are a jeep or a bus — and choosing between them can genuinely shape how your trekking adventure begins.
This 2026 guide by Nepal Vehicle Hiring Pvt Ltd gives you a thorough and honest comparison of all transport options across every factor that matters: cost, travel time, comfort, road conditions, departure points, flexibility, and which option suits each type of traveller.

Syabrubesi is a charming village at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola rivers, surrounded by dense forests and dramatic gorge scenery in the Rasuwa District. It is the official trailhead for the Langtang Valley Trek, Tamang Heritage Trail, and Gosaikunda Lake Trek.
Because there are no flights and no luxury coach services to Syabrubesi, every trekker must choose between a jeep and a bus. Understanding your options in detail is essential to starting your trek on the right foot.

The Tokha-Chhahare-Dhukure road is the most efficient shortcut from Kathmandu to Trishuli, covering approximately 35 km. Starting from Tokha in northern Kathmandu, the route climbs steeply to Gurje Bhanjyang ( m), offering panoramic views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges.
The route then descends via sharp hairpin bends to Chhahare in Nuwakot, continuing along a flatter, faster stretch through Dhukure before ending in Bidur/Trishuli.
From Trishuli, the road climbs through spectacular river gorge scenery alongside the Trishuli River. The road narrows and becomes windier but is generally in reasonable condition. This section takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
The approximately 3 km Ramche landslide zone near Dhunche remains the most technically challenging part of the route as of 2026. Road improvement work is ongoing but sections are rough and unpaved. High ground clearance and 4WD capability are strongly recommended here. Jeeps handle this section noticeably better than buses.
The final descent involves steep switchbacks and a narrow mountain road above a dramatic gorge. The views here are spectacular. The road is rough but fully navigable with an experienced driver.
Monsoon Warning (June–August): Heavy rainfall significantly increases landslide risk on this route. The Ramche and Dhunche sections are especially affected. Nepal Vehicle Hiring strongly advises against travel on this route during the monsoon season.
